Expected Value – Outschool

Expected Value Lesson

Expected value is the predicted value of a variable based on the probability of each occurrence.

To find the expected value for a variable, multiply each occurrence by its probability and add the outcomes.

Ex.:  Juan has played 100 professional soccer matches. The number of goals he has scored in each match has been recorded. Based on the distribution in the table below, how many goals can you expect Juan to score in any single match?

Step 1: Multiply each occurrence by its probability.

Step 2: Add those values.

Based on this data, Juan averages 0.62 goals per match. This is the expected value.
