Iceland’s Glaciers: A Nation at the Crossroads of Climate and Culture
Iceland is known for its beautiful, expansive glaciers that make up 11% of their land mass. Not only are the glaciers a significant part of the island’s geography, but they are important to the inhabitants’ culture and lure millions of tourists each year.
[1] As the Earth has warmed over the past 130 years, Iceland’s glaciers have lost four billion tons of ice, with about half of that loss occurring in the last 25 years. [2] Furthermore, glacial melt can cause damaging landslides, mudslides, flooding, and major infrastructure issues. [3] Officials are worried about the negative impact the disappearance of the glaciers will have on the tourism industry. [4] As glaciers melt, the downward force on the earth exerted by their weight decreases, and the earth rises. [5] This shift caused by the downward force lifting can cause underground pipes to bend, twist, and burst. As the earth continues to warm; Icelandic officials and environmentalists will need to shift their focus from preventing global warming to mitigating the effects of inevitable glacial melt on the tourism industry, the land, and its residents. |
